The client came to CATHEXES after her house had been burned to the ground in a massive wildfire. The impetus of the design came from the need for holding in delicate balance the sensitivities of client’s need for safety, while embracing the beauty and dramatic views of the site.
A modest size home (2300 square feet) was carefully laid out to integrate the previous and existing footings, and create an open floor plan which allowed all spaces to have a connection to the desired views. The procession through the house opens up continually to higher and higher ceiling heights culminating with the open deck as the grand finale.
Careful selections of materials were made based on fire resistance and ability to integrate into the site conditions. High insulation values were used to balance the large glazed walls with energy conservation.
