The inspiration behind this custom residential home springs from various sources, primarily the clients’ vision for a home that not only mirrors future possibilities in the area but also boasts a unique and creative design harmonizing with the Truckee environment. During an initial site visit, the desire to encapsulate the serene ambiance of the surrounding forest became a crucial design principle and led to a design heavily influenced by the prominent natural features of the site. A boulder, resting nestled within the earth, and the presence of a massive 38-inch diameter tree heavily influenced the project, thoughtfully integrated into the aesthetic and became emblems of the surrounding site from the very beginning. The overarching goal was to create a custom home seamlessly blended with its surroundings, showcasing the area’s unique beauty while embracing responsible design principles and promoting a sense of connection with nature.
Continuing and fostering a design supported by natural elements, considerations for the quality of light filtering through the trees guided the incorporation of vertical wood elements to intensify and emulate this effect. Moments of pause are incorporated in the entryway aimed to deliberately slow down those entering the home, fostering a moment of contemplation for a deeper appreciation of the surroundings, enhanced by intentional design features throughout.
Focusing on creating focal points within the home, a bridge with captivating views extends out over the natural landscape, connecting the core of the home with its sister that steps down the site to a lower level nestled into the earth with a bunker-like atmosphere, featuring concrete walls as an annex for kids to laugh and play. The connection between the kitchen and dining room in the core of the home caters to large family gatherings, and a wet bar integrated into the back wall enhances and captures unique views of the aforementioned boulder.
The master bedroom, positioned high in the trees, evokes a treehouse ambiance, while special attention is given to the office space, transforming it into a primary space with carefully utilized glazing and exposed structure.
The design aspires to immerse occupants in the site, allowing them to lose themselves in the forest, fostering tranquility and a connection with nature. Instead of prioritizing fast and efficient movement through the building, the design incorporates moments of pause to showcase each unique space, ensuring distinct character in every area.
Circulation within the house is designed for logical flow between rooms and spaces, with a nod to the peacefulness and beauty of snow serving as a design concept. Radiant heating, chosen for its long-term affordability and inviting nature, emanates warmth from the floors.
A holistic and responsible design approach aims to revitalize the natural landscape using native species, restoring it to its original state. The site grading is minimized, and the design follows the natural topography, harmonizing with the existing landscape. Special care was placed on ventilation studies to make the most out of the radiant heating systems while ensuring a fresh, mountain air supply is bountiful.
